How does a champion fall? Leading self is really the only guarantee a leader has in a team. The better a person is at leading self the higher the probability that a person will be relevant and impactful to others. I call this self-sovereignty. Piranhas and leadership deficiencies are the same kind of dangerous. On a recent trip to Brazil with @Matt Barber, we were on a mission to 'catch giants' The process made me stop and reflect. Losing a finger is highly probable especially when handling live black piranha, they are big, fast and hungry. Piranhas are the fish of most people's nightmares, but on the Araguaia, they are the 'fuel'. Made me think about adult behavioural change - Sometimes the baggage we carry are like piranhas, stealthy, fast and dangerous. Personal deficiencies can crop up at uninvited times and ruin a perfectly good time. However, when the expert guide took a black piranha and reduced it to bait it made me think of how leadership-development works in a similar way. Sometimes we are scared or debilitated by the piranhas in life, we get by avoiding where they swim and hoping that they never surface at an inopportune time (they always do). However..sometimes, we make an effort to partner with an expert to help us catch these piranhas and artfully turn them into fuel for the real target. Ironically we will never be set free to hunt giants without embarking on the treacherous Piranha journey first. Partnering with an expert to develop leadership will unlock your giant potential.
